Partial\Unicompartmental Knee Replacement (UKA). As compared to Total Knee Replacement, Partial knee replacement, also known as unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to address disease in a single compartment of knee joint. It's a more conservative option than a total knee replacement but can be done when only one portion of the knee is affected. During the surgery, the damaged or arthritic section of the knee joint is replaced with a prosthetic component, which includes a metal implant and a plastic spacer. Unlike total knee replacement, partial knee replacement preserves healthy bone and cartilage in the unaffected parts of the knee. This generally leads to a quicker recovery, less pain, and improved joint function, however there are other downsides to the procedure so it can ideally be done to a very specific group of people. Dr Abhishek Jaroli can discuss the details of the procedure, its pros and cons and how it can be compared to total knee replacement or other suitable option such as high tibial osteotomy.
